01Problem
A driver is consistently several tenths off a reference lap but cannot identify where. Subjective feedback points to a lack of rear grip in slow corners.
02Method
- 01Align the driver's best laps with a reference lap by distance.
- 02Build a cumulative time-delta and split it by corner phase: braking, entry, minimum speed, exit.
- 03Cross-check speed, brake pressure and throttle traces at each loss point.
03Analysis
The delta shows the losses are not in slow corners but in the braking zones before them. Brake pressure peaks later and releases abruptly, compromising rotation and minimum speed.
04Findings
- Roughly two-thirds of the time loss sits in three braking zones.
- Brake release is binary rather than progressive, reducing entry rotation.
- Exit throttle is delayed as a consequence, not a cause.
05Performance Opportunity
Progressive brake release in three corners represents the largest single opportunity in this illustrative dataset — with no setup change.
06Conclusion
Perceived vehicle limitations can be driver technique in disguise. Separating the two with data focuses effort where the time actually is.
