01Problem

A Pro-Am pairing shares a GT car in an endurance race. The setup that suits the faster driver makes the car nervous for the less experienced one, who must complete a large share of the race distance.

02Method

  1. 01Compare both drivers by corner phase to find where the gap sits — braking, minimum speed or exit.
  2. 02Measure each driver's balance preference from steering, yaw and throttle traces.
  3. 03Evaluate three setup directions for their effect on each driver's pace and consistency.
  4. 04Weight the result by each driver's expected share of race laps.

03Analysis

Two-thirds of the gap sits in braking and corner entry, where the less experienced driver brakes early and avoids trail braking on a car set up to rotate freely. A more stable entry balance costs the faster driver about a tenth, but gains the slower driver several — and reduces their lap-time scatter.

04Findings

  • The fastest setup for one driver is not the fastest setup for the race.
  • Entry stability is worth more to the developing driver than it costs the experienced one.
  • Three targeted coaching points closed more of the gap than any setup change.
  • Consistency gains reduce risk in traffic as well as lap time.

05Performance Opportunity

Combining a compromise setup with a focused coaching plan narrows the gap from 1.8s to 1.1s in this illustrative model — worth around 38 seconds over a four-hour race at the drivers' expected stint split.

06Conclusion

In endurance racing the car belongs to the line-up, not the quickest driver. Optimising for total race time changes both the setup and the coaching priorities.
